Karel Van Miert, former Commissioner of the EU and TEN Coordinator of the new railway connection between Berlin and Palermo was a great supporter of the Brenner Base Tunnel. In recognition of his work for the Brenner Base Tunnel and the accompanying activities to encourage the shift of freight traffic from road to rail, the stretch of the exploratory tunnel between Innsbruck and Aica has been named the "Karel-Van-Miert Tunnel". After completion, the 64-kilometer Brenner Base Tunnel between Tulfes/Innsbruck and Fortezza will be the longest railway tunnel in the world. So far 16 kilometres of the tunnel have been built. The work on the exploratory tunnel is proceeding apace and will be followed by the construction of the main tunnels and the railway equipment, until the start of the operations. The Brenner Base Tunnel, part of the TEN-1 Corridor, linking northern to southern Europe, will become reality.
